MagFest 5 - 2007

NOTE: This section of my website is VERY outdated. I really don't post convention pictures here anymore. Instead, you can find thousands and thousands of them on my Flickr account, located at:

Enjoy!

These pictures were taken at MagFest 5, held in early 2007 in Vienna, Virginia. The Dorsai Irregulars worked security at this convention, and I was asked to work the con along with them.

As always, I have additional pictures of this event available and the current pictures are available in a higher resolution. If you'd like copies, please contact me.

If anyone knows who any of the bands or people in these pictures are, please let me know.

Yes, those are ATX power supplies ripped right out of PCs. Yes, those are exposed wires which are feeding the amp.

No, do not try this at home.

The con had a neat idae of scattering these "treasure chests" all around the hotel. They were "swap boxes" in that you could take something out, so long as you put something in in return.

I "seeded" a bunch of these chests with packets of Ramen Noodles, all of which disappeared shortly thereafter. :-)

The gamging room was in use at all hours of the day.

One of the bands sets up for a concert to be held later that night.

8

A line began to form before the doors to the concert open. I took this picture while I was working badge check.

9

This pit-like room was home to the LAN gaming that ran around the clock. Multiple game servers were run on the inhouse network so that people could plan LAN games locally.

Sadly, there wasn't much in the way of an Internet connection from this room.

The gentleman on the right side of the picture goes by the name of "Triforce", and is the leader of a gaming group called Empire Arcadia.

Seen in the picture is a game on the Super Nintendo that they manage to crash, or at least put into an infinite loop where it stopped polling the controllers, which became unresponsive to user input. My understanding is that it involved exploiting a race condition when occurs when a player loses the game. Fun stuff.

This was another clever idea. There were "save points" around the hotel, wherein convention attendees could write their name, level, quest, etc. into a book. The next picture is a picture of the actual book.

A picture of the book from one of the save points. I occupy the second save slot.
